Southern Buttermilk Biscuits
Southern buttermilk biscuits are a classic, known for their light, flaky texture and crisp golden edges. What sets them apart from other biscuits is their simplicity, relying on just a handful of ingredients and a few expert techniques to create the perfect result. The most crucial step in crafting these biscuits is ensuring that the butter stays cold. When cold butter hits a hot oven, it melts and releases steam, creating pockets of air that make the biscuits rise and develop layers. These layers are key to that signature flakiness, giving the biscuits a tender bite while maintaining just the right amount of crispness on the outside.
Another essential step in this recipe is folding the dough. While it may seem like an extra task, folding the dough over itself a few times before cutting the biscuits helps create those delicate, flaky layers. The process is simple but effective, and it ensures that every bite offers that satisfying, buttery texture.
With just five ingredients—flour, baking powder, salt, cold butter, and buttermilk—these biscuits are remarkably easy to make. Most home bakers will already have these ingredients in their pantry, making it a go-to recipe for when you’re in need of a quick, comforting side dish. The biscuits only take about 15 minutes to bake, making them an easy addition to any meal.
Serve these southern buttermilk biscuits with a generous slather of gravy for a classic pairing, or add a dollop of butter or jam for a sweeter touch. No matter how they’re enjoyed, their tender, flaky texture and rich, buttery flavor make them a timeless favorite in Southern cuisine.
